Review: Conspiracy of Silence (The Tox Files) by Ronie Kendig

About this Book

Four years after a tragic mission decimated his career and his team, Cole “Tox” Russell is persona non grata to the United States. And that’s fine–he just wants to be left alone. But when a dormant, centuries-old disease is unleashed, Tox is lured back into action.

Partnered with FBI agent Kasey Cortes, Tox has to pull together a team to begin a globe-spanning search for answers–and a cure. As their quest leads them from continent to continent, it slowly becomes clear they’re not just fighting a plague–but battling against an ancient secret society whose true goals remain hidden.

With time running out and opposition growing on every side, the key to everything may rest in an antique codex, the Crown of Jerusalem–but will Tox and his team be able to trust each other enough to break this century-spanning conspiracy of silence?

My Review

As this story opens, our hero, Tox, is attempting to rescue his kidnapped niece. The odds were against him, but his training and tenacity wins out, especially when he suspected it was a trap. The opening scene grabbed my attention and didn’t let go until the end. Tox and his team travel through many countries and deal with intense situations. As typical for a Kendig novel, it’s intense and action packed from start to finish.

In my opinion, Tox is a dark hero. He has a lot of demons that haunt him, which at times makes it hard to like him. But I found myself liking him more and more as this story progressed. Although he has a lot of rough edges he is beginning to soften in the right ways.

I loved the chemistry between Tox and Agent Cortes. She was a spit fire FBI agent who was trained in lie detection. She added much to the story to help Tox and his team get the answers they needed.

Much like the previous novella that introduced us to Tox, this story deals with a deadly virus. The author has added a secret society to the mix in this story, which I’m still trying to determine if I really like that aspect. I do look forward to what is next for Tox and his team.

You do not have to read the previous novella to understand what is happening here, although it has been free on Amazon. It’s a quick read, so I suggest reading it before reading this one.

I give this book 5 Stars! (Learn more about my rating system)

About the Author

An Army brat, Ronie Kendig grew up in the classic military family, with her father often TDY and her mother holding down the proverbial fort. Their family moved often, which left Ronie attending six schools by the time she’d entered fourth grade. Her only respite and “friends” during this time were the characters she created. My Review

I loved each book in the series. The men of Raptor had strong character and were as you would expect men of integrity. I have to say my overall favorite character was Hawk. He is the feature character in the second book, but we see him throughout the series. I loved his spunk and quick wit. As you will see in book two, despite his temper and impulsiveness he is a man of his word no matter the cost.

The books in this series are action packed to say the least. The author paints a picture of what is happening around the characters with such intensity you feel like you are there. In addition, the author displays what life is like for women in that culture.  She also keeps you guessing on what happens next in many cases and provided some interesting twists along the series.

Each story has a secondary plot that often provides a reprieve from the intensity of the main story. The secondary story in book one with Todd and Amy was gut wrenching to say the least. The author very quickly and effectively pulled you in their lives and their pain.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, man or woman, who enjoys military based stories. They are full of action and there is also a romantic piece to each story. She keeps it real in that life is messy.

No disclaimer on this one. I received the first one free on Amazon and purchased the other two.
