About this Bible

Do you believe that God not only loves you, but that he also likes you? It’s just one of the soul-searching questions posed by bestselling author Brennan Manning who confesses he has been ‘John the beloved, Peter the coward, and Thomas the doubter all before the waitress brought the check.’ The NIV Ragamuffin Bible offers a collection of Manning’s raw, painfully honest, yet grace-filled devotions, meditations, and reflections of his journey limping back to—like the prodigal son—his overjoyed father. When you journey through this Bible, you will likewise find yourself returning to your Heavenly Father, basking in the knowledge that God not only loves you, he delights in you. Features:* Complete text of the world’s most popular modern-English Bible, the NIV* 104 Devotions guide you into a deeper connection to God and his Word * 250 Reflections help you understand what it means to be a child of God* 150 Quotes offer short but thoughtful insights into God’s kingdom * Presentation page for gift-giving

My Review

I love reviewing Bibles. I love encouraging people to read their Bible. I’ve heard of people who buy a new Bible each year and read it and mark passages that spoke to them, and made notes throughout. At the end of the year they give the Bible to a family member. What a great heritage!

It appears that this Bible is only available in the New International Version (NIV). However, the NIV is probably the best thought for thought translation of the Bible, so a very good choice. On the back cover, of the hardback edition, you see the question, “Do you believe that God not only loves, you but that he also likes you?” I found that an interesting approach and something that has been a struggle for many.

As I read through many different passages in both the Old and New Testaments I found short devotional thoughts tied to different passages. There are also simple quotes that are encouraging.  There are a few footnotes throughout but not many. There are no cross-references available provided in this Bible. There is only a brief introduction by Brennan Manning as well as an introduction to the NIV translation. At the end of Bible there is a page for weights and measurements and an extensive acknowledgements.

If you are looking for a study Bible with lots of notes and commentary this is definitely not the Bible for you. However, you are looking for a Bible in an excellent translation with short and touching devotions this is a good choice.

12 Replies to “Review and Give Away Ragamuffin Bible”

  1. I love Romans 8:38-39
    For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  2. This has been one of my favorites since I first read through the Bible in high school. It felt like something I would read in the Narnia books or something. =)
    2 Timothy 2:11-13 –“Here is a trustworthy saying:

    If we died with him,
    we will also live with him;
    if we endure,
    we will also reign with him.
    If we disown him,
    he will also disown us;
    if we are faithless,
    he remains faithful,
    for he cannot disown himself.”

  3. Being recently disabled, I’ve not only gone through a lot of pain, but a lot of emotions. The scripture of “Jesus wept.” has become to mean so much to me.

  4. I have many favorite verses but one of my tops is from Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
    It always encourages me.

  5. There are so many favorites. One is John 3:16′, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that who so ever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
