About this book
A Cowboy at Heart, an engaging Amish-meets-Wild West adventure from bestselling authors Lori Copeland and Virginia Smith, weaves a clever and romantic tale of new starts and second chances.
1886–Jesse Montgomery is beginning to feel restless. Though he’s grateful to his friends Colin and Emma for helping him get on his feet again after a few bad choices and some hard living, surely the Lord doesn’t want him to stay in Apple Grove forever. Doesn’t the Almighty have plans for this reformed rowdy cowboy to build a life of his own?
When an unscrupulous cattle baron tries to steal Amish land, Jesse intervenes and is wounded. Lovely Katie Miller, the young healer in the district, attends to him while trying to guard her heart. This sweet Amish widow cannot risk falling in love with an Englisch cowboy, charming though he may be. And yet–she believes God has a life for her too that is more than what she can presently see. Could there be a future with Jesse only He could bring about?
The Interview
Welcome to the first Google Hangout On Air interview! I’m so excited to do this first online interview with Ginny Smith. In 2008, she put a request for influencers to the ACFW Book Club group for her new book Stuck in the Middle. This not only introduced me to a wonderful writer and expanded the genres I read, but I meant a wonderful godly woman. I had great fun today doing this interview.
My Review
Once again Copeland and Smith take us to 1800’s Kansas and the Amish community of Apple Grove and back with dear friends, the Switzer Family. In this installment we see a lot more of Jonas Switzer, his passion for his family and his faith. We also see the side of Jonas as he struggles with the principles of his faith in the face of adversity. Maummi Switzer, though slowing down some in her old age, is still feisty and always ready with a proverb to fit any situation. In this edition we get to know Katy Miller the young widow of Samuel Miller, and daughter-in-law of Bishop Miller. Also in the spotlight is Jesse Montgomery, Luke’s cow hand from the first book, and the object of Rebecca’s journey in book two.
I found Katy’s story especially touching. She faced several heartaches, that many women face today, however, women today have so many resources that weren’t available to women in the 1800’s. Jesse’s story is also a familiar one, he was an alcoholic struggling to stay sober. But one thing about Jesse is he will have some fun, especially with Maummi Switzer. There are some great dialog between the two of them. The authors also did a great job of adding some twists to the story that I did not see coming.
There is so much more I could say about this book. Copeland and Smith write a story with several subplots that tie everything together and move the main story along. Even though this story deals with some more serious topics than the previous books, there are some fun and lighthearted moments. One particular scene had me rolling on the floor laughing and cheering for Jesse.
The only thing I didn’t like about this book, is it appears to be the last in the Apple Grove Series.
Disclaimer: I did receive this book from the publisher but was under no obligation other than to give my honest opinion.
