Rock Harbor Search and Rescue – Colleen Coble and Robin Caroll

About this Book

In Rock Harbor Search and Rescue, a middle grade fiction novel based on Colleen Coble’s bestselling Rock Harbor series for adults, kids will enjoy the mixture of pets, adventure, suspense, and a mystery.

Emily O’Reilly is obsessed with all things Search and Rescue. She volunteers with the team and goes on rescue missions with her stepmom. She is even selling homemade jewelry to save up for her own Search and Rescue puppy. But when an expensive necklace is stolen from a renowned jewelry artist at Rock Harbor’s fall festival and Emily is accused of the crime, it looks like she’ll never get her puppy and be able to join the Rock Harbor Search and Rescue team.

Emily isn’t willing to give up on her Search and Rescue dreams that easily, and she sets out to find the real culprit and to restore her reputation. With a few suspects in mind, Emily is determined to uncover the truth, but she isn’t prepared for the secrets she and the Search and Rescue dogs sniff out in the process. This exciting mystery is filled with twists and turns that will keep readers on the edge of their seats and have them pining after a Search and Rescue puppy of their own!

My Review

I love the Rock Harbor series and was excited to hear Colleen Coble along with Robin Caroll were taking readers back there, even if the stories are designed for 8 to 11 year olds.

This was a good story. If you’ve read the Rock Harbor series you are familiar with all the characters in this story. But if you haven’t read the original series you will quickly figure out the characters and their relationship to one another. Emily is the primary character and is a typical 13 year old girl. She’s discovered boys but still feels awkward around them. She has to deal with catty girls  and family dynamics.

The only character I had a problem with was Emily’s dad, Donavon. It was frustrating to see him treat Emily like she was a difficult or disrespect child, taking the word of others over his own daughter.

The mystery itself was good. I love being about to solve the mystery right along with the main characters. I had some guesses along the way but did the authors did a good job of adding some twists.

Even though Amazon lists this book for 8 to 11 year olds, I think girls and maybe even some boys older would enjoy this story.  The main characters are girls, but you have the storyline of the surf competition and the search and rescue dogs.

I love to read, especially mystery books. Though in the past couple of years I've been a part of the ACFW Book Club and have found some wonderful writers. It's been fun to interact with authors.

  1. My almost 8 year old son would love this! And I’m excited that Colleen Coble is writing books for the younger ones, since I already know what a great author she is. There is a serious lack of good fiction for kids. (or maybe it’s just that I’m ultra-picky about what he reads! lol) Thanks for the giveaway!

  2. I’ve read Colleen Coble’s work and like the way she writes. I haven’t had a chance to read the Rock Harbor series but it sounds good.
